Recipe: Joyous Almond Fluff Brownies

"In a world of instant coffee, instant Internet access and instant gratification, it's nice to take a breath and slow down a bit.

Last I checked, being a grown up isn't all it's cracked up to be, and I try to reinforce with my children that they should enjoy being kids while they still are kids. Part of this involves instilling a love of family rituals and traditions.

A case in point: We enjoy Halloween as much as the next family but especially love the ritual of preparation even more. Each year we add to our collection of ghoulish delights. Each year we search for the perfect pumpkin.

No one enjoys the rites of childhood quite as much as my son. Hopefully, he will always carry that sense of wonderment and joy throughout his life, although I have my concerns. No one can quell the secret passions of your elementary school days quite like a jury of your peers, in this case a gaggle of middle school boys.

Every year, we have an overabundance of candy, given to the kids by our lovely and generous neighbors. I give each of the kids a one-gallon Ziploc bag, and they get to keep what they can fit inside."

  • Joyous Almond Fluff Brownies

Recipe News: Bake a pie for Thanksgiving dinner

"While pumpkin pie has long been a traditional part of Thanksgiving dinner, I thought it might be fun to shake things up with something different.
In my recent column, From the Kitchen, I asked readers to submit recipes for something different for Thanksgiving dinner. They not only shared recipes, but one shared a special memory connected with her recipe and another suggested a perfect topping for her pie. One is a combination of two recipes and still another includes molasses that adds to its sweetness.
Rather than take up any more space talking about the recipes I received, I'll simply say thank you to everyone who shared and let you get on with reading these yummy-sounding choices."

Includes recipe for:

  • Wet Bottom Shoo-Fly Pie

  • Pecan pie

  • Cran-apple peach pie

  • Grandmother's Apple Pie

  • Apple Shoo-fly Pie

  • Lemon meringue pie

Recipe News: Oddfellows Whoopie Pie Bake-off's 'Best Traditional' winners share their recipe

"Last week, we covered the baked good all-stars of the first (annual?) Whoopie Pie Bake-off held at Oddfellows.
We asked the winners of the "Best Traditional" category, seven-year-old Eliza Dworkin and a-little-bit-older Robin Wehl Martin from the team entry, Chef Eliza and Sous Chef Robin, if they would share their secrets and winning recipe with CHS. Here's the recipe but, sadly, the teammates delivered none of their secrets other than that Robin is celebrating her birthday this week. Happy birthday, Robin. Enjoy some pie."

Recipe News: Mini Coconut Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting

"Today I am posting my road test of a recipe for Mini Coconut Cupcakes with Chocolate Frosting that I adapted from the cookbook Salty Sweets by Christie Matheson, which I read about on the fine blog The Kitchn.

I, like many of those in the big old blogosphere, have strong feelings about cupcakes. And today's cupcakes, I believe, are like some kind of creature from a horror movie - you know the creature which some nice, spectacled scientists have been quietly nurturing in their lab but that then spirals out of control, growing fast and bloated and threatening to take over the world. "

At the local coffee houses these sell for about $2.00 each. Your friends will wonder what gift shop you bought these from. Try making a batch of these and place them all wrapped up in a basket by the front door for your visiting friends to take one home with them after the party."

Recipe News: Christmas Gingerbread Recipes

"Gingerbread is a sweet that can take the form of a cake or a cookie in which the predominate flavor is ginger.

As a cookie, gingerbread can be made into a thin, crisp cookie (often called a ginger snap) or a softer cookie similar to the German Lebkuchen. Gingerbread cookies are often cut into shapes, particularly gingerbread men.

A variant dough is used to make gingerbread houses à la the "witch's house" encountered by Hansel and Gretel. These, covered with a variety of candies and icing, are a common Christmas decoration."

  • Chocolate Gingerbread Boys And Girls
