Recipe News: Simple ways to lighten up traditional recipes
Meatloaf, chocolate cake, blueberry muffins — there’s nothing better than good, old-fashioned comfort food ... unless you’re trying to eat healthier.
OK, put down the celery stick and stop crying. With a few simple substitutions, you can not only make traditional recipes healthier, you can have your cake and eat it, too (and what good is cake if you can’t eat it?).
You can make any recipe healthier by reducing the amount of fat, salt and sugar and increasing the fiber. All it takes is a little trial and error.
“My parents love meatloaf, and I make it with turkey instead of ground beef to lighten up the traditional recipe,” said Cindy Brown, of Asheville. “You get a lot of the flavor without the fat.”
