Recipe News: Woman makes her own dog food
The recent rash of national pet food recalls has sparked the business spirit of a rural Linton woman who now finds herself spending several hours weekly in the kitchen making meals and treats for her family and two dogs.
Deb McEnery, who lives west of Linton, has also launched her own Web site that shares with subscribers her tips and recipes for home-prepared pet food meals, diet plans, and snacks.
"In light of the recent pet food recalls, it occurred to me that we need to make changes in the way we care for our pets," she said. "When I started getting the e-mails (about the recalls) I said what am I going to do. This is a big thing. This is not a little thing anymore."
The recalls played a major part in her decision to cook for her pets exclusively.
"The one organic dog food company I found - Blue Buffalo - they got recalled two days ago," she noted.
McEnery points out that a look back in history shows that dogs have for a long time shared food fare with their keepers.
