Wine News: Argentina plants vine in wine sales
Today, a brief history of Argentinean wine...
"In 1541, when the Spaniards arrived on the east coast of Argentina near the Plate River, they immediately planted grapes to make wine. But they found that the climate on the coast was no good for growing grapes.
A year later, Jesuit priests from Chile brought grape seeds over the Andes into western Argentina, where the vines grew and prospered.
Most of the Argentinean grapes are still growing in Mendoza in the far west, just one mountain range from Santiago, Chile. This range is capped by Mount Aconcagua -- at just more than 23,000 feet, it's the highest mountain in the Western Hemisphere."
